New Regulations Will Affect Industry on Eastern Seaboard

Thailand’s Cabinet on has approved the revision of ministerial regulations on environmental and health impact assessments of industrial projects, deputy government spokesman Phumin Leetheeraprasert said. These regulations will adversely impact industrial development in the Eastern Seaboard, particularly Map Ta Phut projects.

Concerned residents, civic groups, tourism operators and NGOs have expressed their opposition to a planned oil-exploration project by giant oil firm Chevron off the three jewel islands in the Gulf of Thailand.

Recently, the 5-star Royal Cliff Beach Resort and its world-class, multi-purpose meeting facility Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall (PEACH) were presented the EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) Monitoring Award 2008 by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in recognition of their outstanding environmental management practices.

Ongoing investment projects in the Map Ta Phut industrial area can continue without waiting for new pollution-control rules to be established, says the National Environment Board (NEB).

The US Energy Department recently raised its short-term gasoline price forecast, saying it will peak at a monthly average of about $3.73 a gallon in June, 13 cents higher than its previous forecast.

Oil steady above $41 as investors eye inventories

SINGAPORE (AP) — Oil prices were steady above $41 a barrel Wednesday in Asia as investors looked to a US crude inventory report later in the day for signs of demand amid the worst recession in decades.
