Rare New Species Discovered in Greater Mekong

A bird eating fanged frog, a gecko that looks like it’s from another planet and a bird which would rather walk than fly, are among the 163 new species discovered in the Greater Mekong region last year that are now at risk of extinction due to climate change, says a new report launched by WWF ahead of UN climate talks in Bangkok.

1,000 species of orchids and cultivation cover more than 5,000 rai, with the bulk of the land dedicated to growing located in Bangkok and neighboring provinces such as Nonthaburi, Ratchaburi, Kanchanaburi, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani and Chonburi.

Two 150-million-year-old turtle fossils recently found in north-east Thailand have been classified as a new Jurassic-era species, clinching the kingdom's claim to land-turtle ancestry in South-East Asia, media reports said recently.
