Mali, a baby Asian elephant, born at Melbourne Zoo in Australia six weeks ago, has had her naming ceremony by Buddhist monks where she was named Mali. The name is Thai for jasmine and was chosen out of fve possibilities derived from her Thai lineage in a public vote held by the Zoo. Mali's mother is Thai. Little Mali has proved to be a huge draw with thousands having visited Mali since she made her public debut and she has also been growing at a steady pace, gaining up to a kilogram a day

The first elephant born in Australia has been drawing huge crowds. Taronga Zoo’s visitors’ numbers have surged to 12,000 a day, up from the usual 4,500 as people flock to see the baby male elephant born in the beginning of July to its Thai mother.
