Australian PM condemns 'scum' people smugglers

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) Australia's prime minister denounced people smugglers who set hopeful refugees adrift in rickety boats as "scum" and pledged Friday to step up efforts to thwart them, after one vessel exploded at sea and killed three people.

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — The Australian government sent a navy mine hunting ship to search Monday for hundreds of tons of chemicals lost overboard during a mishap that also blackened miles of beaches with fuel oil.
