The accolades, such as they are, rolled in to Jeeves for his brilliant column that ended 2009. Jeeves would have the taken credit from Benny “I Keek a Touchdown” Ricardo except that Jeeves was MIA on holiday break. “What a multi–lingual column Tagalog, Thai, Spanish and broken English.

It’s that time of the year when no-talent writers of all stripes pull out the insidiously mundane columns about “what’s under the Christmas Tree” left by Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Santa or just plain old St. Nick. If it’s not that then “The stocking were hung by the chimney with care.” If those two approaches failed then it would be the phony New Year’s resolutions always the bastion of the non-creative mind. Not here mate. All Thai’s received an early holiday gift when Tiger Woods proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he qualifies as your typical Thai male.

When there’s an elephant, a specie of the pachydermatous family, in the room your options are fairly limited. Ignoring the un-ignorable is not one of those.

No argument Manny Pacquiao is the best boxer in the world as he currently is carrying the sport on his shoulders. On a Saturday night in Las Vegas he entered his name as an all time great when Referee Kenny Bayless called a halt to his fight with Miguel Cotto at the :55 second mark of the 12th. It was Pacquiao’s (50-3-2) seventh world title in different weight divisions.

Death in the ring is something boxing has to live with. Some deaths are preventable with proper supervision, strict medical requirements and competent officials. Still death does come with the territory even in the most regulated environment.

It’s not too often that The Square Ring is “spot on” when it comes to predicting the outcome of world title fights. Then again a “blind hog sometimes finds an acorn”. TSR correctly predicted that Vitali Klitschko (38-2) would have too much experience for Chris Arreola (27-1).

There are reports, never confirmed, that people bet on boxing. In fact TSR knows a “boxing manager” that regularly bet’s (it is legal in Nevada) on fights and wins big. It’s possible that maybe the dreaded ‘betting” public can propel the sport back to the front of the line in the worlds sport pages. Lem Banker is the ultimate bookmaker.

Many believe all things always happen in three’s. Those theorists became prophets with the death of world champion boxer Vernon Forrest. Alexia Arguello and Arturo Gatti proceeded Forrest in death just weeks before. Arguello’s and Gatti’s deaths have been ruled suicide although that decision for Gatti does seem a bit dodgy.
