Pattaya Bar Hours Extended; 24-Hour Bars May Be Possible Soon
Pattaya bars, Go-Gos, nightclubs, karaoke parlors, beer bars, discos and late night restaurants are now allowed to remain open until wee hours of the morning for now - and maybe even for 24 hours soon. Popular Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome made the announcement today in response to the thriving tourism demands on the party city voiced by bar owners and workers. Even places like the new Hilton Pattaya will benefit because many arriving international guests still operate in Pattaya on the timezone they came from and are looking for something to do when they arrive late, said the Mayor's foreign business adviser.

Improvements in the most unlikely of places: There are a number of go-go bars around Fun Town that have managed to remain open, and presumably proved viable as business entities, without ever inspiring me as a customer. This, of course, is a purely personal viewpoint, and doesn’t mean I’m right. It’s just I could never figure out how they attracted sufficient custom to stay open. I sometimes have a feeling mediocrity is rewarded, and not just in the bar scene.

Another pleasant into the valley Sunday: Having been writing about the Pattaya nightlife scene for a decade now, I know it’s easy to become jaded and cynical, so it’s nice when I have the opportunity to spend an evening in the company of people who do not necessarily frequent the fleshpots of Fun Town as regularly as they might like. This was the case on a recent Sunday night when a well-known Bangkok-based writer (whose name shall not be revealed here), his friend from Los Angeles, and I, spent a few pleasant hours trawling through some of the go-go’s on Walking Street. Their observations provided a fresh perspective on an old subject

Seen more licks in two years than Jimi Hendrix plucked in a lifetime: On Sunday night 30 May the Baby Dolls go-go in Soi 15, off Walking Street, will be celebrating their second anniversary. Naturally, this will involve a party in which a large porcine creature will find itself impaled on a metal spike and turned into free food for patrons. Actually, in past times when Baby Dolls has thrown a party the food has very often been ordered from one of Pattaya’s more popular English-style restaurants, so this may well be the case again.
