TEFL Schools Being Investigated Over Misleading English Teachers

Siripun Sinbuathong 18.03.2011 02:22

It is now mandatory for all foreigners that wish to teach in Thailand to take the 20 hour Thai Culture Course. There are no exceptions. The purpose of this course is to familiarize one with the general “ins and outs” of the Thai culture, and how to apply it in and out of the classroom.

The course is an insight to the Thai lifestyle and customs and is designed so that English teachers can understand Thai ways of doing things that are very much different to the ways things are done in Western countries and not offend Thai students. Teachers must have the certificate of completion before the Ministry of Education will issue a teacher’s license or a work permit.

The Teacher and Educational Personnel Council Act stipulates that teaching profession shall be a regulated and licensed profession. Thailand’s Teacher Council created the training program to equip foreign teachers teaching in schools in Thailand with knowledge and understanding of Thai culture and teacher professional code of ethics to guarantee and provide protection for the public to obtain quality education as well as to develop and upgrade the teaching professional standards in the country.

The Thai Culture Courses were suspended 4 weeks ago for a period of at least 6 weeks while the Ministry of Education investigated certain complaints. TEFL Schools are promoting the fact that their TEFL Courses include the Thai Culture Certificate when in fact they they do no not.

Teachers have been applying for teaching licenses producing bogus certificates that have not been issued by the Ministry of Education so their applications are being rejected and many foreign teachers have complained to the MoE.

Those who violate article 46 or 56 or "Mislead others that they have rights and work without the permission from the Teachers Council and Educational Institutes cannot accept them as teachers unless given permission from the Teachers Council or work in the profession or mislead others that they have rights to work without a Licence must be imprisoned not more than 3 years or fined 60,000 baht or both."

The only official training provider in Chonburi is Tewi Language School (CTLS Language School) located off Pattaya Klang. This school is listed on the Government Website at No 21 out of 27 as we at the Pattaya Times decided to check for the benefit of our readers.
