Punch and Judy's hearty Big English Breakfast can fill the most empty of stomachs.

Punch and Judy, the English style Pub, opened its' doors in early November last year in Soi 8 that runs from Thepprasit to Third road, where it runs into Soi 17.

Passing it on a regular basis on my way into town, I arranged to meet up with three friends and try their breakfast menu.

As my friends were late, it gave me a chance to peruse the menu at leisure and what I saw gave me encouragement to come back and try an evening meal at a later date.

But back to that breakfast: being a bit of a trencherman when I have my monthly treat of breakfast out, I went for the Big English that comprised 2 pork sausages, 3 rashers of bacon, eggs (fried, scrambled or poached) baked beans, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, sauté potatoes, two pieces of toast and marmalade and tea or coffee for 160baht.

There is a smaller breakfast that has only 1 sausage and two rashers of bacon plus the rest for 140baht.

One of my companions opted for an omelette at 130baht and declared it to be very good; the rest of us went for that fried breakfast and it too was excellent both in quality and quantity.

Your alternatives for breakfast are as follows: American, 4 rashers of bacon, eggs (fried, scrambled or poached) hash browns, toast and marmalade and tea or coffee for 140baht. There is also an Asian breakfast at 95baht, continental at 150baht, eggs on toast at 95baht or cornflakes for 85baht.

If you eat there at lunchtime or evening you have an extensive menu to choose from.

Starting with baguettes or sandwiches you have a choice of brie & bacon, cheddar & bacon, cheese & tomato, cheese and pickle and the club sandwich with fries. Prices range from 95-200baht.

If you want something more substantial, go for a jacket potato, fillings include bacon bits & cheddar, baked beans,  tuna mayo, chilli & cheese and prawn with Rose Marie sauce. All come with coleslaw and garnish and the prices run from 120 to 150baht.

Still want more, and then go for the ploughman’s lunch for 290 baht. This comprises cheddar cheese, off the bone ham, ½ pork pie, ½ scotch egg, pickled onions, side salad, red onion chutney and a white roll.

Other “light items” include salads 160-180baht and soups at 95baht. You will also find breaded brie and mango chutney dip,190baht; sea bass & shrimp fishcake, 110baht; duck & plum sauce wraps,130baht and chicken liver & brandy pate, 120baht.

Moving on to the evening meals the selection is very good.

Shank of lamb, 380baht; cordon bleu, 180baht; Shepherds pie, 210baht; bangers & mash, 190baht; beef medallions ,350baht; gammon steak, 190baht; calves liver & bacon, 190baht; beef & stout pie, 280baht; Salmon Wellington, 330baht and pork chop with cider & apple sauce, 250baht.

Not enough, go for the mixed grill and that should satisfy most appetites.

On Sundays, they do a range of roasts, comprising chicken, lamb, loin of pork, sirloin of beef, or a trio of all the last three. Prices range from 280-310baht and all come with lots of extras.

To round it off, if you have room, there is a choice of banoffee pie, chocolate sundae, selection of sorbets or cheese & biscuits, priced from 95-295baht.

If your Thai partner does not like “farang” food, they have a range of Thai foods: soups & starters, 95-120baht and main courses at 95-120baht.

There is a huge range of drinks for the alcoholics and tea and coffee etc for the rest.

When I have eaten an evening meal there, I will report back to you.

Since I wrote this piece, several of my friends have had an evening meal here and everyone agreed the food was excellent.

Incidentally, if you did not go out for Christmas dinner, you missed a cracker of a meal there for 1200baht. This will be my venue for 2011.
