Deputy Interior Minister Thavorn Senneam has warned that insurgents operating in the deep South have stepped up unrest during 2011.

Mr Thavorn said that there were signs that insurgents in the three southern provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat have increased their violent attacks in line with their ‘seven steps plan’ this year to discredit the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

He said his ministry had ordered every concerned government security unit to step up security measures to prevent every form of unrest by searching suspicious looking persons, especially at checkpoints.

Some 4,000 people have been killed in the troubled southern provinces since insurgents launched renewed fighting against the government in early January 2004.
