Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva presided over the send-off ceremony for the Thai/Darfur Task Force 980, to join the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) Sudan.

Thailand’s participation in UNAMID follows the Royal Thai Government’s policy to support the United Nations in maintaining international peace and security and to do its utmost to help alleviate the plight of fellow human beings, as Thailand is a responsible member of the international community.

Established in July 2007 by the United Nations Security Council, UNAMID was mandated to protect civilians, provide security for humanitarian assistance, monitor and verify implementing peace agreements, assisting in the inclusive political process, and contributing to promoting human rights and the rule of law.

Thai troops will be tasked with conducting patrols, protecting civilians, UN facilities, convoys and workers from the UN and other humanitarian agencies, as well as providing medical services.

Thailand’s participation in UNAMID marks another milestone for Thailand as a UN member since the Thai infantry battalion must be self-sustaining enough to operate effectively in a different and harsh environment.

Deployment of the 800-man Thai battalion to UNAMID will not only raise Thailand’s profile in the international arena, but also enhance the honour of the Royal Thai Armed Forces. At the same time, it will strengthen bilateral ties with Sudan.
