One of the most popular traditional Thai cultural competitions is the Buffalo Races held in Chonburi every year. This year the competition is going to be the biggest yet starting with a grand opening ceremony and will be held from October 16-22 at the field in front of the Chonburi Provincial Council.

Chonburi Governor Saenee Chittarasaem said, “The Buffalo Race is a great event that attracts a lot of local and foreign tourists. The local people like to watch the races because they are held only once a year and it’s a fun competition to watch while the foreigners love to see them because they have never seen something like this before.  Some of the highlights of the event are the baby buffalo race, the buffalo decoration competition, the buffalo health competition and the “Miss Buffalo” contest.  There is also going to be a “Mrs. Buffalo and Mr. Buffalo” contest in which contestants must be 65 and over for female and 70 and over for males. There will also be a country music singing competition as well as other traditional events that should not be missed.”

Throughout the week there will also be OTOP products on sale and traditional Thai performances during the nights. The final buffalo races will be held on October 22 and will finish off with a parade of all the buffalos as well as the traditional Thai cart parade.

As for the buffalo race competition, it is divided into four categories; super small, small, medium and large depending on the size of the buffalo.  The races will start from 10am onwards.
