Fluoride Milk to be Produced in Chonburi for School Children
Chonburi province has been selected by the Ministry of Public Health as the first province in the Eastern Region to produce fluoride milk for local school students. The reason Chonburi was chosen is because Chonburi already has milk manufacturers as well as the necessary technology required for quality milk production derived from the Royal Chitralada Projects.
Dr. Marut Jirasetsiri from the Ministry of Public Health said, “The Ministry of Public Health is very supportive of the fluoride milk project as we believe that it helps prevent tooth decay. The nutrients in fluoride milk are also beneficial for children. Once we start producing this milk we will not distribute it to the all schools immediately, but test it with students in our project first. We will conduct scientific tests to ensure they meet the standards we have set.”
“The manufacturing procedures that we will use is the same manufacturing process used in Bangkok. There are three tests which need to be conducted. First we have to test the milk to see whether the fluoride level is sufficient. Then we will collect urine samples from students who have consumed the milk to see whether the fluoride level is enough to benefit them and make sure that the fluoride level is not too high.”
“Finally we will record the urine tests along with the students’ health test and teeth test to make sure that the milk actually benefits the students and to see whether it really does help prevent tooth decay. This test will be conducted for five years with the help the Dental Health Division and the Department of Health.”
“Once all of the tests are done we will report to the public the findings,” added Dr. Marut.
Pattaya Deputy Mayor Weerawat Khakai said, “We have supported the school milk project together with the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Education ever since it was first introduced. The main objective for this project is to give our local school students a proper nutritious diet in their everyday life along with helping them grow and giving them strong bones and teeth. We want our local students to be strong not just physically but also mentally so that we can compete with those in developed countries. As the children are our future leaders we want to support them with the best.”
“Once the tests are complete, every single student in public schools across Chonburi including the 11 Pattaya City Schools will be able to drink fluoride milk every day,” added Deputy Mayor Weerawat.
