The Pattaya Marathon was recently held with a Kenyan national Maisel Julius Kiplimo taking first prize in the men’s race.

This year’s marathon, sponsored by Power Plus, kicked off at 4:00am. There were hundreds of runners of all ages and some even brought along their pets, packing the area in front of Pattaya City Hall, where the race began.

There were runners from 12 countries including China, Japan, Kenya, Australia and the United States. The full marathon (42.195km) was won by Mr. Maisel Julius Kiplimo, 25, from Kenya in a time of two hours and 23 minutes. The female race was won by Ms. Fridah Tepkite Lodepa, 20, also from Kenya in two hours and 54 minutes. Both winners went home with 150,000 baht each in prize money along with memorial medals.

Ms. Sunisa Sailomyen came first in the Thai Female National category. She completed the race in two hours and 57 minutes. The Thai Male National category the winner was Mr. Boontueng Sreesung in two hours and 32 minutes. Both Ms. Sunisa and Mr. Boontueng were awarded 70,000 baht each in prize money.

As for the half marathon (21.1km), the winner was Mr. Sunchai Narmket who took only an hour and 11 minutes and collected 40,000 baht prize money. The Wheelchair Marathon (10.55km) was won by Mr. Prawat Waohrum who took only 24 minutes to complete the race.

Australian national Leigh Barrett, 22, who participated in the Quarter Marathon (10.55km) said, “This was my first time in Thailand and also my first time competing in a marathon. Having to get up so early in the morning was quite painful but when I got to the event my spirit was just overflowing because the crowd were screaming and yelling supporting the runners.”

“The race turned out to be fun as I got to interact with some of the local runners who gave me advice on what tourist destinations I must visit. It was also a good sightseeing venture as I went past some local markets and even got to witness the Buddhist morning ritual of ‘giving-food-to-the-monk’. I was given a medal at the end as well just like everyone else that completed the race which is simply the best souvenir,” added Miss Leigh.
