Thai Team Wins Sailing Championship Again
A Thai team recently came first for the third consecutive year during the The Ioda Asian Championships recently held in Pattaya. The Ioda Asian Championship is a well known sailing competition that has been accredited by Optimist International. Ioda stands for International Optimist Dinghy Association.
The five-day event was held at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club located on Pratumnuk Hill in which sailors from all over the world came to compete. A Thai team was able to once again score the winning title with Singapore following closely behind.
The event was organized by the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King (YRAT) and the Royal Varuna Yacht Club (RVYC).
Admiral Kumporn Poomhirun, Navy Commander and Chairman of the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King (YRAT) said, “There were sailors from 20 countries and over 100 hundred sailors who came to compete in this event. Some of the countries represented were Japan, America, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Taiwan, Spain and many more.”
“As for Thailand we entered 15 sailors led by Ms. Noppakaow Poonphun who was the winner in last year’s competition held in Brazil.”
All in all the event was a success with the Thai ‘Team A’ beating Hong Kong then later it was the Thai ‘Team A’ competing against Thai ‘Team B’ in which ‘Team A’ won. The Thai ‘Team A’ then later battled against Malaysia and won and was faced with Singapore in which the Thais won again. This is the third year in which Thailand has won the ‘Team Racing’ category.
Sailors in ‘Team A’ included Ms. Noppakaow Poonphun, Mr. Todsaphol Mahawichian, Mr. Jirawat Jardklai, Mr. Don Witdraft and Mr. Touchcharin Narborne. The competition was divided into three races. In the first race, Singapore beat the Thais so the Thai sailors stepped up and won the second race. In the third race, the Thais dominated, leaving them with only 13 negative points while Singapore had 23 negative points.
Ms. Noppakaow said, “I am so happy that we won, we have all worked so hard. Even though, the rain put the race to a halt for a few hours it didn’t stop us from winning. I hope we will win again next year.”
