The Department of Skills Development recently held a seminar to improve the skills of the disabled people as well as teach them to become more driven in the workforce in hopes to open them up to more opportunities. The Labor Minister also confirmed that disabled people have the same rights in the work place and also guaranteed to help improve the skills of the disabled as well.

Pattaya has many centres to assist, train and educate disabled people of all ages including the Father Ray Foundation and the Pattaya Redemptorist School for the Blind that give disabled people a chance of obtaining good employment.

The purpose of the seminar was to allow the business owners and the disabled to understand the legal rights they have in the workplace. The seminar discussed legal guidelines relating to policy development for the skilled disabled.

Labor Minister Charlermchai Sriorn said, “The Ministry of Labor has created a policy that the disabled people will be supported in terms of skill development. We will also assist in  looking for jobs for them so that they can earn an income to live on as well as make sure that they receive all of the employee benefits and rights according to the law. Whether it is a private or public company, all must follow the rules we have created for the disabled to be fair.”

Director General of the Department of Labor Nakorn Silapharcha added, “According from a research conducted in 2007, there are about 1.9 million disabled people in Thailand. This is a huge number and so this is why the government has paid a lot of attention to the disabled. We want to make sure that everyone is treated equally and that companies are not discriminating against hiring a disabled people.”
