Pawn shop owners have been experiencing a sharp rise in business as people are pawning their goods more than usual during the World Cup so they can gamble on the results.

Mr. Tawee  Authaiyot, Sriracha Pawnshop Manager said, “Ever since the start of the World Cup pawnshops throughout Chonburi have been significantly more busy than usual. With a doubling of customers compared to the same time last year, this year’s World Cup has provided a big boost to pawn shop businesses. Locals bring in valuable items such with gold being the number one item followed by electronic goods.”

“Because of the World Cup, pawn shop businesses have been turning over at least 3 million baht per day. During other times pawn shop businesses usually turnover only about 1.5 million baht per day. The majority of customers are people between the ages of 22-35 of both genders.” Mr. Tawee added.
