Outlook for Tourist Arrivals is Good
Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Suraphon Svetasreni said that he expects that more foreign tourists, particularly Asians, will gradually return to the country in the fourth quarter this year. Mr Suraphon reasoned many tourist destinations were unaffected by the anti-government protest by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) also known as the Red Shirts.
Tourists, particularly those from Hong Kong, Japan, India and China, are expected to return soon as most countries, except for the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, have lifted their travel warning for Thailand.
The TAT chief meanwhile admitted that European visitors may not visit the kingdom so soon as many European nations are now facing economic uncertainty which may result in lower spending on vacations and travel generally. The uncertainty might also affect their longer term planning, normal for Europeans planning a vacation in Thailand.
He added that the number of foreign travellers at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Thailand’s major international airport, has increased to around 22,000 a day from a low of around 12,000 a day during the peak of the political protests.
When comparing the number of foreign tourists who come through Suvarnabhumi in the low season with last year, the numbers this year are only off by around 8%.
