Thailand is vying to host the 2020 World Expo. Following the success of the World Expo currently running in Shanghai, Pattaya is eager to host the 2020 event and has been selected, along with Ayutthaya, Phuket, Phetchaburi, Chiang Mai and Junthaburi to join a short list of contenders.
President of the Tourism and Sport Association Pattaya Office Rattanachai Suthidechanai said, "We are very confident that we will be chosen as the venue to host the World Expo over the other five provinces. We have decided if chosen, to host the World Expo at the Thammasart University Learning Resort which has 1,200 - 1,500 rai of land. It is only 120 kilometers away from the Suvarnnabhumi Airport and only 30 kilometers from the U-Tapao Pattaya International Airport. We have over 25,000 hotel rooms of two-star to five-star quality. We have many distinct tourist destinations as well."
President of the Pattaya Business and Tourism Association, Jamroon Vitsavachaipan added, "Pattaya has been chosen to host many international exhibitions in the past such as the Money Expo. Our transportation system is soon to be further developed with the monorail project underway. However, to be able to host the World Expo, Thailand must first put itself forward to host the event."
