Stuart Thompson Collects His First Medal

Monday, May 24

Pattana A & B White - Stableford

1st Trevor Schirmer (15) - 39

2nd Sid Ottaway (23) - 34

3rd Russell Exley (7) - 33

4th Alan Pilkington (12) - 30

CSS 74

A long delayed return to Pattana, after several attempts to strike some sort of reasonable deal for the golfers finally bore fruit, turned out to be just as tough off the white tees as it always was. It was therefore even more remarkable that Trevor Schirmer was so far and away better than the rest of the hopefuls who struggled to mark the standard par of 73 and perhaps bears out his conviction that "he has a good chance off of 15 but none off of 14", but then again maybe it is all in the mind set. Suffice to say Trevor will once again be off 14 when next weeks competitions begin.

Sid Ottaway although being five shots adrift was an steady performer in second place just one ahead of Russell Exley in third and four in front of fourth place Alan Pilkington.

The day’s difficulty was underlined by the CSS moving out to 74 for the day.

There were no2’ in the second division but Russell Exley took the only one in the first division.

Before presenting the prizes Stephen Beard welcomed back Yasuo Suzuki.

4th Trevor Schirmer (15) - 78 cb 39.5

2nd Division

1st Chris Knapp (17) - 74

2nd Sid Ottaway (23) - 78

3rd Rod Howett (24) - 83 cb 42

4th B.J. Smith (23) - 83 cb 43.5

CSS 74

Once again the blue tees over the Mountain and Lakes courses proved to be a stern test of golf for the majority although the CSS stayed at a steady 74 for the day.

Stuart Thompson is now almost back to his old form prior to the serious shoulder surgery over a year ago, and although he would not put the day’s round in his top drawer of results still finished well pleased with the outcome as the winner of his first medal out of The Haven.

Yasuo Suzuki was hopeful of a slightly better result than second place as the course was playing its full length following heavy overnight rain but had to be satisfied in the end to just edge in ahead of Alan Pilkington and Trevor Schirmer in third and fourth respectively with Alan winning the count back by 38 to 39.5.

In previous medals this year Chris Knapp has struggled to find the form of last year that netted him two top spots, but this time he was the master of the second division with a four stroke cushion ahead of Sid Ottaway, who put in another steady performance for second place in front of Rod Howett and B. J > Smith with Rod taking the count back by a margin of 42 to 43.5.

B.J. Smith took the roll over 2’s in the second division and Marty Rock cleaned up with the only one in the first division.

Back at The Haven Marty Rock, Geoff Picken and Mark Campbell were welcomed back.

Friday, May 28

St Andrews White - Stableford

1st Russell Exley (7) - 36

2nd Rod Crosswell (15) - 33

3rd Phil Knight (10) - 32 cb 17

4th Pete Murphy (12) - 32 cb 16

CSS 73

St. Andrews was in absolute tip top condition as the group took advantage of a very generous holiday rate offered by the management of 2000 baht which included green fee, caddy, and sole use of a cart to play one of the most scenic courses in the area and always a good test of golf although the yellow tees may have been a better choice on the day after it was found to be in very good shape following the recent heavy weather.

Russell Exley took full advantage of his length off the tee and new found consistency around the greens to record a workmanlike win at level handicap par and a clear margin of three shots of Rod Crosswell in second place. Rod’s new and higher GA handicap did not seem to give him as much of and advantage as some might think and it seems only reasonable to accept that this will be the situation on quite a few occasions in the coming months with our members visiting from OZ and unlikely to cause too much of a problem for other players in the future.

Phil Knight took third place by virtue of a better back nine of 17 to 16 to push Pete Murphy down to fourth place.

There were no 2’s in the second division but Phil Knight knocked one in to claim sole possession of the first division pool.

Before the presentations Rod Crosswell, Michael Healey, Pete Murphy, Carl Lovatt, Ian Hart, Frank McGowan and Phil Knight were all welcomed back.

If you would like to play with The Haven group you can contact Russell on mobile 084 782 4582 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road.
