Looking Back at Pattaya Curfew
On the night's of May 19 and 20 Pattaya resembled a cemetery as people were not officially permitted to leave their residences after 10:00 pm. Walking Street was nearly empty and unusually dark.
This was the first time in over a decade that Pattaya was put under curfew. Even though the curfew was only for two nights, many entertainment centers and hotels were significantly impacted. Pattaya City Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome wrote a letter to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva requesting cancellation of the curfew in Pattaya by convincing and proving to him that Pattaya was a safe zone. Prime Minister Abhisit responded immediately by cancelling the curfew in Pattaya after just two days.
During the curfew locals and tourists alike were asked not the leave their homes between 10:00 pm - 6:00 am on May 19 and 9pm-5am on May 20.
On the night of May 21 Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol along with Pattaya City Officials stood in front of Walking Street to announce the cancelation of the curfew in Pattaya. Cheers were heard all around and the lights immediately shone again. Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol also assembled a small fleet of city pick-up trucks to go around town and announce the cancellation.
It was not long before the city was back to its lively self once again.
