The Square Ring

Howard Reed 06.05.2010 16:42

There is no doubt but that Mayweather-Mosley was the biggest fight of the year 2010 to date. Covering it was fun if for no other reasons than "stuff happened." "Stuff happening" makes a columnist job easy. Shane Mosley is the WBA welterweight champ yet the fight wasn't for his belt. Mayweather jr. holds no title. Why? No belt no sanctioning fee. In steps the WBC with the announcement that the fight will be for the WBC Diamond Belt. But you say, "Manny Pacquiao currently holds the WBC Diamond Belt at welterweight. Therefore it would seem that Mayweather jr.-Mosley would fight for a "interim" title." NO chance Leroy. How can there be 2 WBC Diamond Championship belt holders at the same weight ? The same way that Willy Nelson said "I broke par on the my golf course today. Shot 154." "That can't be true, Par 154 ?" "I own the sucker and par is what I say it is."

THE PREDICTIONS Vs. FACT

Mayweather jr. can't complain about Mosley not submitting to "blood testing". He did so 8 times. TSR polled a cross section of boxing fans and readers. The results were 50-50. Two former professional boxers, Sir Frog and Dave Stewart, liked Mayweather jr. A Croaking Sir Frog opined "Mayweather jr. on points. Mosley gonna attack for 8-9 rounds. Maywesther gonna run for 8-9 rounds. Mayweather will take 10-12, he doesn't have the punch to KO Mosley. Maywesther on points. " "I agree with Frog ! Mayweather on points but I think it will be a boring fight," chimed in Stewart who had a 22-2 record when he retired in '08. Both were almost right except that Mosley after landing a hellish right with more than a minute left in round 2 had nothing left. Nada, Zip, Zero. He was puffing like Paul Reveer's horse after the "midnight ride". Mayweather jr. didn’t really run in fact it was surprising that he would agree to fight somewhat flat footed for him.

Lady D'Eve responded with a little reluctance. Some year's ago she predicted a a Mikkel Kessler win due to "his blue eyes. The tongue in cheek prediction bombed. "I like smart hard working boxing coach Richardson in Mosley's corner. He has more than one battle plan so can adjust in the heat of the fight. Mosley may pull it off. The spoiler is if Mayweather gets on his bicycle. He has great defense skills which could present a problem. I will pick Mosley. I believe in miracles. PS Did I mention that Mosley has green eyes ?" OK can the eye angle. Richardson did have a number of battle plans except that Mosley couldn’t excute. After Mosley extended himself in the first two rounds he didn’t nothing offensively. He moved for the sake of movement not with a purpose.

Former collegiate boxer and grade school pal Rich Etori Corti agrees with Lady D'Eve that Mosley could win. Corit inserts a caveat. "be an interesting fight. Both are fast, Mosley has better power. Age could be the determining factor. If Mosley doesn't get old, which can happen. He can beat Mayweather. Tough, but I'll pick Mosley on a close decision." Mosley showed all his 38 plus years after the first two rounds. His punches had no sting while Mayweather jr. answered any attempt with authority. Watching the fight at Shannigan’s on Second Road in Pattaya TSR scored it 118-110 as did Rock"n"Roll Rick before the fight. Judge Robert Hoye had it right 118-110 while the two other judges missed the boat at 119-109 all ofcourse for Maywesther jr. After the fght.

VALERO KO'S HIMSELF

At 28 Edwin Valero, whose professional boxing record was 27 and 0, lost his last fight. He lost to himself. He's dead by his own hand. Valero who KO'd all opponents KO'd himself in his jail cell after being arrested for killing is wife. One former trainer of Valero said, "He's a devastating puncher, a great fighter but a little crazy." That can now be revised to a "lot of crazy." His run in's with the law are well documented. Listing them would serve no purpose. In any other line of work Valero would have been shunned instead of lionized as he was in life and now by some in death. Boxing is a brutal sport with violence outside the ring no more common than for a football player. Boxing doesn't punish it's transgressors' while other sports do. The sport isn't to blame. The person is. Some of the drivel coming out is sickening. Here is a guy that first beat up his wife then weeks later killed her.

"I asked the authorities not to let him out. He needed a lot of help. He was very bad in the head," his manager told reporters. "But they let him out. They were very permissive with him and because of that, we're now in the middle of this tragedy." Yes we're in the middle of this tragedy because he was allowed by the authorities in Venezuela, his management and the greedy in boxing to almost get away with murder. Promoter Bob Arum tried hiring private guards but Valero slipped them. Valero was a bum. Those that speak of him as a kind and gentle man are full of bull. A bum is a bum is a bum.

SURPRISE SATURDAY….KINDA

Besides Sergio Martinez (45-2-2), who moved up in weight, did anyone think that Kelly Pavlik would lose a UD (116-111,115-112,115-111) and the WBC/WBO middleweight championship ? Not only did Pavlik get beat up but he got sliced'n diced like a infomerical by Ron Popeil. Once Martinez survived a Pavlik power surge in the middle rounds, which included a 7th round flash knockdown, the new champ was home free. One school of though has tagged Pavlik as one dimensional while others are convinced that he hasn’t been the same since he was taken to school by Bernard Hopkins. Oh yes and will the very popular boxing website that thinks it’s cute to called Hopkins "Be-Hop" stop it. It’s neither clever, cute or terribly creative. Stupid comes to mind. Of course when you’re shilling promoters for "ad dollars" I guess everything is on the table.

At MCH Messecenter Center, Herning, Denmark

Too often fights don't live up to the hype.. That wasn't the case when now former WBC Champion Carl "The Cobra" Froch (26-1) mixed it up with Mikkel Kessler (43-2). It was a "slam bang" punches filled action fight from the opening bell. Some felt that the fight was very close although the final scores of 117-111,116-112 and 115-113 don't reflect that opinion. The win for Kessler marks his third reign as world champion. Both fighters landed big punches especially in the final round where Kessler seemed to have an edge. Froch vowed "I am here to knock Mikkel Kessler out," In the third round of the tournament Kessler will get Jermain Taylor replacement Allan Green who has a June 10 date in Oakland with Andre Ward. Froch goes from frying pan to the fire as he must face a "very angry" Arthur Abraham.

JEEVES EMAIL

Wellington Jeeves, Esq. here with a disclaimer. His Lordship was again in charge as I'm working my elbow's to the bone in Asia. I take no responsibility for what appeared." Loved the headline in the last edition of the Pattaya Times. Volcano to World: "Suck Ash !!!." Too bad his Nobleness isn't as creative.

Your Lordship I enjoyed a night at the fights in Manila with my pal "Rock & Roll Rick" on one side and Ronnie Nathanielsz on the other. Ronnie's a well know boxing commentator and writer. Cuz Bruce McTavish refereed 2 of the "4 title" bouts. Ronnie made a statement that at the time seemed to show a rare insight into boxing. Later in the light of the Valero incidents it became more poignant."Boxing is beautiful sport but such a dirty game."

LORDSHIP TIME

In the "man bites dog" section is the case of a boxer being forced to apologize to a promoter. Promoter Frank Warren sued Ricky Hatton for remarks made in a November '09 interview. Not only will Hatton have to say "I'm sorry" but will also have to pay damages. Yes a pint of lager, a cigar and music provided by my new temporary house person "A"is the order of the day. Yes "A" has a sister named "B". Celebrating another week without Jeeves. Cheewit dee Khrup.
