The Dusit Resort

Executive Chef Adrian W. O’Herlihy is the guiding light behind the international gastronomy at the famous Dusit Resort, Pattaya. Hailing from Limerick his culinary journeys have taken him around the world many times. When presented with the task of transforming the Saturday night buffet his past experience determined that his gourmet extravaganza should be called, Cuisine De Monde BBQ buffet. It is beyond a doubt global cuisine encompassing a world of epicurean delicacies. Whatever your culinary soft spot you’re sure to find it in this buffet. From Irish stew to chicken tikka masala to Chinese duck - it is here. Mick and I were astounded by the diversity and array of the intercontinental cuisine.

The scope, span and superiority of this buffet is extraordinary. Forty cooking stations and forty chefs present a world of 5-star dining. The hors d’oeuvre tables alone present over a hundred items to start your around-the-world feast. Seafood and venison terrines nestle next to Parma ham, pate maison, black forest ham, air dried beef, south Tyrol bacon, gravalax, Thai spicy salads and much, much more. I counted over two dozen salads of every imaginable combination with dozens of dressings and sauces. The seafood counter was a remarkable sight with a myriad of coral crustaceans fresh and shining just waiting for us to slide them onto our plates.

We decided to start the proceedings with a few fresh French oysters and sashimi before we moved on to the cooked oyster station where we could order oysters Kilpatrick (with bacon and Worcester sauce) or Chef’s signature, "oysters Adrian". We chose these and they were fantastic. First they were lightly fried and then anointed with Irish whisky, cream and sprinkled with spring onions resulting in oyster nirvana.

Moving on, the main courses are housed in domed heated dishes containing coq au vin, smoked chicken curry, ratatouille nouvelle a la nicoise, potatoes cooked in every way, pan fried snow fish in mustard sauce, frog’s legs, escargot and so it went on, one heavenly dish after another offering the very best in culinary creations. We were overwhelmed.

The Middle Eastern table was another of our favourite stops, shawarma turkey, baba ganoush, tahini, taboulah, and falafel all cooked to traditional recipes and expertly executed. The Indian kitchen offered chicken tikka masala, kebabs, breads, and saffron rices while next door Chinese ducklings and Hong Kong suckling pig hung in heated cabinets. With all this fine fare we were drinking the excellent Columbian Valley (Naked Wine) Merlot at B.1300 a bottle.

As you would expect the fruit and dessert tables were a veritable cornucopia of extravagance. Blueberry cheese cake snuggled next to chocolate mousse, apple tarts crème caramel, bread and butter pudding and if they didn’t temp, a chef was on hand to flambé a crepe suzette.

This Cuisine of the World BBQ buffet is a remarkable affair. Such abundance of sumptuous fare is mind-blowing and the cost, I hear you say? An astonishing B.1,240++. Where in the world would it be possible to dine so lavishly and in such abundance for such a price.

Mick and I had a wonderful evening. We dined under the stars, listened to the melodious band and ate gourmet treats from the around the world. If this review reads like a rave – that’s because it is! If you only go to one buffet while you’re in Pattaya make sure it is Chef Adrian’s grand banquet at the Dusit Resort.

The Cuisine of the World International BBQ Buffet is every Saturday night from 6.30 pm to 10.00. Dusit Thani Pattaya is located on Beach Road Pattaya (North), near the Dolphin Roundabout. Tel: (038) 425 611 Ext.2270.
