Major Military National Security Issues Addressed in Pattaya
The 25th High Level Committee Meeting between Thailand and Malaysia was recently held at the Dusit Thani Pattaya where two representatives; General Songkitti Jaggabatara, Supreme Commander of the Thai Armed Forces and Chief of the Air Force of Malaysia Tan Sri Dato Sri Azizan bin Ariffin signed a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ to put a stop to the on-going insurgency in the South of Thailand as well as stopping illegal cross-border trading.
The private meeting discussed activities that will strengthen the relationship between Thailand and Malaysia. They also discussed supporting each other’s projects that will benefit both countries.
General Songkitti said, "Overall the meeting was a success. We discussed establishing joint training between the Navies and the Air Forces. We have conducted training together before but never between the Navies and the Air Forces. We will also create a working group to review the agreement between the Thai Government and the Malaysian Government that was signed in May 18, 2000. The said agreement will be adapted to suit the current situation of the two countries."
Chief of the Air Force of Malaysia Tan said, "We want to strengthen the relationship between our neighboring countries. During the meeting we discussed being tighter with border patrols to stop illegal cross-border trading. We also talked about exchanging information that would benefit both countries."
