Hutchinson Technology (Thailand) spent over Bt4.3 billion to open its frst manufacturing plant abroad for disk drive components, according to Thailand’s Board of Investment (BOI).

Speaking to journalists after a foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Hutchinson factory at Rojana Industrial Park in Ayutthaya a central province of Thailand, Ms Ajarin Pattanapanchai, BOI’s deputy secretary-general, said the factory is Hutchinson Technology’s frst foreign investment.

The move refects foreign investor confdence in investing in Thailand, which would also strengthen the hard disk drive business in the country.

According to Hutchinson Technology, suspension assemblies for disk drives, the company’s signature products, are to position the recording head above the disk, providing an electrical connection from the recording head to the disk drive’s circuitry.

The Ayutthaya plant is expected to be complete in August and be operating within October, while it will start its frst production before the end of this year for the world’s major hard disk drive companies, with their production bases located both in Thailand and other countries.
