Psc Golf From Tropical Bert’s

Peter Blackburn 21.01.2010 21:15

We had one of our largest showings of golfers this day, which was to be expected, it being the peak of the tourist season for Pattaya.

It is always great to meet old friends and meet new ones, no matter how ephemeral those acquaintances may prove. We hadn't played at Phoenix for some time, so it was good to be back to the home of the tastiest tuna sandwiches in Pattaya (your correspondent's own prejudice).

On this day Scotsman Henry O'Brien had joined our foursome and we had a lively conversation about the Anglo–Saxon oppression of the Scots and just about everybody else since Edward Longshanks. Of course the French would probably vote for Henry the V as the chief tormentor and the Americans for George III, so everybodyhas his favourite tyrant. But at this point our Captain, DB protested that the badinage was dominated by someone other than himself and we should get on with the golf. He didn't have too bad a day, finishing fourth in his flight, but the main contest was on between Motown Man, Brian Gabe, and Colin Cronin. I asked Colin, why he had won and he answered that he hadn't played in a few months and was totally relaxed, with no expectations. And this is often the explanation of why we play golf well: less is more.
