Pattaya Mayor Meets Locals for the Second Time to Discuss Traffic Solutions for Sukhumvit Road
This was the second meeting that Pattaya City met with locals before they finalize the best possible solutions agreed to by both parties before presenting it further for approval.
The meeting was led by Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome and was attended by government representatives, business owners in Pattaya and
the local residents.
Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol said, “The four intersections that we have been investigating are where Sukhumvit Road meets North Pattaya Road, Central Pattaya Road, South Pattaya Road and the Thepprasit Road intersections. We need to find the best solution to fix the traffic congestion in those areas. The best solution would be a solution that is aesthetic in design and is suitable in a engineering perspective as well as being environmentally friendly. At the moment we have came up with three possible solutions which are to either build bridges, underpasses or tunnels or a combination of these.”
“Before we decide on a solution we want the locals’ thoughts on ideas and to listen to their suggestions first,” added Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol.
Mr. Jita Saejia, a representative from the company responsible for the solution investigation said, “After the first meeting with the locals and government officials that was held in October, the majority of the locals voted on building a tunnel of 700 meters at North Pattaya, a tunnel of 980 meters in Central Pattaya, a tunnel of 675 meters in South Pattaya and also a tunnel of 575 meters in Thepprasit road. The tunnels will consist of four lanes each being 3.5 meters wide.”
Many of the locals agreed on the idea but some are worried about the South Pattaya intersection because the land level is very low and the tunnel might flood when it rains. There were also concerns about the building process which will take along time and the construction site will cause traffic congestion.
Possible solutions for traffic management on Sukhumvit Road include a mix of bridges, underpasses and tunnels.
Mr. Jita replied, “Pattaya City has plans to build a new water sewage system which will prevent floods and the construction site shouldn’t cause too much traffic congestion because we will only close one lane.”
The proposal will soon be put forward to the board after the city officials have gathered all of the required information and data.
