SOUTH EAST ASIA VICTORIOUS OVER GERMANY
The international flavour continued at the Thai Polo and Equestrian club on Saturday 12th December with a four chukka contest between South East Asia and a team sent by the German Polo Association to represent Germany, for the coveted B.Grimm 131st Anniversary Cup.
The German team, featuring the three Winter brothers, all physically imposing at well over 6 feet tall were matched by the SEA quartet of experienced Malaysian international players supported by one of the Thai Polo Club’s directors, Harald Link. A large gathering of Spectators, guests and celebrities were treated to a famously delicious lunch served at the club’s unique and stunning Chukka Bar before sitting to watch the opening ceremony of gleaming sports cars full of glamorous girls leading the opposing teams onto the field of play.
Without further ado the ball was thrown in, and it was Germany that opened the scoring with a fine shot from Christopher Winter, but this was soon answered with a well stuck penalty hit from the club’s host Harald Link. The first half of the match ended 2 goals to 1 in SEA favour after a superb lofted penalty from Malaysian 4 handicapper, Edham Shaharudin, went sailing between the goal posts.
During the half time break the spectators had their chance to stroll onto the pristine turf of the club’s Field 1 for the traditional divot treading and returned the playing surface to it’s usual immaculate condition.
The fast and hard riding German team equalled the score early in the second half, but two further penalty hits on target from Harald Link, followed by some magical man to man passing resulted in SEA increasing their lead to 5 goals to 2.

Trophies were given out to all of the players from both teams and a bigger trophy was awarded to the winning team, South East Asia.
However, it appeared that the German giants were not about to give up, and rode out onto the field for the last chukka, seemingly in over-drive, and battled their way through their opponents strong defences to keep the match within their grasp. It was Stephan Louis who scored a tenacious goal with lightening fast reactions to put his nation back in contention, reinforced by another point on the board from the dynamic and accurate Christopher Winter to bring them within one goal of their opponents.
Despite their gallant efforts the day was to belong to SEA. Owing to their fluid and clinical passing skills they were able to maintain their authority over the match and sealed their place on the winner’s podium with a last second strike on target from the mallet of their star player, Husaini Yunus to bring the final score to 6 goals to 4 in their favour.
A hot air balloon from Horse Shoe point rose gracefully skywards as the sun was setting on a festive day at the Thai Polo Club, and the beautiful trophy was duly presented to the jubilant SEA team by His Excellency the Ambassador of Russia.
