US Ambassador Visits Pattaya Orphanage and Gives Press Conference
The memory of beloved American Father Ray lives on at the Orphanage with a visit from American Ambassador Eric John.
American Ambassador Eric John and Mrs. Sophia John made a very special visit to Pattaya in March to witness the fantastic work ongoing at the Pattaya Orphanage, to meet with the local press and to attend the to view first hand the living legacy of its founder, the late Father Ray Brennan, an American Catholic priest, who established the orphanage in 1972 with the help of American soldiers in Thailand during the Vietnam War.
“There is a humanitarian relationship between the United States and Thailand. Some of our actions are about politics, others about economics, more about caring,” the compassionate envoy stated.
The Johns are no strangers to Thailand as he was posted at the US Embassy in Bangkok for several years in the early 1990’s and his son was born in Bangkok. Both the Ambassador and his charming wife who is a Korean-American speak Thai.
Upon arrival, Ambassador and Mrs. John were welcomed by Pattaya Orphanage Director Father Michael Weera Phangrak and greeted with warm smiles from dozens of the orphanage’s children.
Also in attendance were several local Thai and expatriates who volunteer their time and energy to making the Pattaya Orphanage a true haven for disadvantaged children. Following a tour of the facility led by Pattaya Orphanage Manager Radchada Chomjinda, Ambassador and Mrs. John presented the orphanage with a set of children’s books donated by the Books for Thailand Foundation with the generous support of the Asia Foundation.
The Ambassador and Mrs. John were both very touched by their visit to Pattaya Orphanage as were all those who joined on the tour that day.
In a press conference with local media His Excellency commented on the momentous significance of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s first official visit was to Asia, not Europe.
