B. GRIMM GROUP OF COMPANIES CELEBRATES 130TH ANNIVERSARY WITH INTERNATIONAL POLO MATCH IN PATTAYA
In a spectacular display of horsemanship and fine polo play, the England National Team defeated the South East Asian Team in a hard-fought match in Pattaya
Polo, the game of kings, comes to Pattaya bringing one of Thailand’s most prestigious sporting events here. Recently, the Thai Polo and Equestrian Club hosted England’s National Polo Team led by Andrew Hine, the English team manager, which was appointed by the most prestigious ‘‘English Hurlingham Polo Association’’ (HPA), they played with the South East Asia (S.E.A.) team at the Thai Polo & Equestrian Club on 13th December for the special occasion of the Celebration of The B. Grimm Group’s 130th Anniversary.
The event was also supported by South East Asian Polo Confederation, the Southeast Asian Equestrian Federation and many prestigious sponsors including B. Grimm, La Martina, American Express, Quintessentially, Grey Goose, DusitD2 Barracuda, True Visions, Siam Country Club, Blanca pain, Piaget, Horseshoe Point, Herald Tribune, Thailand Tatler, Prestige, Harpers Bazaar, Hello Magazine, Hi! Magazine, Bari Lamai Resorts, L’Occitane, Central Festival, Burberry, Escada, La Perla, the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, Le Notre and Pattaya Times newspaper. The event is likely to become an annual tournament between the two teams, as it was a huge success for all involved. This was the first time ever in the history of the English National Team, that they have flown over from England to play with teams outside their country. It is also a remarkable first for a S.E.A. team to be assembled with a great combination of S.E.A.’s best players, which in this case happened to be one Thai, two Malaysians, and one Singaporean.
The event attracted a large crowd of Foreign Dignitaries including His Majesty (HM) the Sultan of Pahang and His Royal Highness (HRH) the Crown Prince of Pahang, who few into Utopao International airport on private jets for this special celebration. His Majesty’s godson HRH Ahmad Shazril Ezzani was also part of the S.E.A team. Apart from the royals, many of Bangkok and Chonburi Province’s elite, including VIP guests, celebrities, leading players and polo patrons, were invited to attend this year’s Anniversary Cup.
Coinciding with the polo event, American Express held their exclusive American Express Platinum Journey rally starting from Dusit Thani Bangkok and progressing to the Thai Polo & Equestrian Club in Pattaya, to join the celebration of the B. Grimm Group’s 130th Anniversary. With over 200 platinum card holders sharing these exclusive polo experiences, it made the polo celebration even more prestigious than other polo events, which were previously held in Thailand.
Prior to, and after the match, plus during breaks, the few hundred strong crowds came to the activity area to enjoy various kinds of local foods and high tea from Le Notre Restaurant. Many entertainment activities including Rege Ludwig’s exclusive polo class, kids’ polo, pony rides, photo shoots, foot massage, and unique shopping experiences from high end brand names located alongside the polo field.

Opponents jocky for positions to take a shot
Last but not least, next to the clubhouse, where the free flow of high tea was placed, the guests could also enjoy Grey Goose vodka cocktail drinks at the Chukka bar, which was turned into the Grey Goose Lounge. Cocktail preparation lessons were also conducted exclusively for the guests; so by they enjoyed different types of cocktails created exclusively for this celebration.
All in attendance witnessed a great polo match that provided excellent sport, superb horse, great sportsmanship and a variety of great skills including high handicap skills. The English team had the handicap of playing in a foreign country on strange horses, but they have the experience of playing as a unit, so the cohesion of their play was a pleasure to watch.
The S.E.A. team showed their determination and skill, while trying to compete with the excellent interplay of England’s National Team. The England team defeated the S.E.A. with the score 9 to 6.
A rematch of the teams is planned in a polo match to be held later this year, again at Thai Polo and Equestrian Club, and surely will be a great attraction not to be missed.
