Cambodian Support For Thaksin Backfires - Cambodian - Thaksin Shinawatra - Weerasak Kowsurat - Tourism

Thaksin Shinnawatra's appointment as Finance Advisor to Cambodia has resulted in a drop in trade and tourism for both Thailand and Cambodia, Weerasak Kowsurat, the International Institute for Trade and Development Director, has revealed.

Mr. Weerasak said the tourism sector has not yet recovered from the airport being closed by protesters last year and the political problems and now the situation is being exacerbated by the Thai-Cambodian conflict.

Mr. Weerasak said he believed that tourism to Cambodia was being affected more than Thailand as there are few direct flights to Cambodia presently with most commercial airplanes stopping in Thailand before flying to Cambodia. He suggested that a third country was needed to help mediate the dispute and strengthen the relationships of the two countries.
