The international Thailand Open Chess Championship 2009 starting from the 1st of April through to the 6th was announced jointly by Mr. Ronakrit Ekasingh Deputy Mayor of Pattaya together with Mr. Nitti Kongkrut Director of the TAT Pattaya Office, Mr. Kai Tuorila President of the Bangkok Chess Club Tournament, Mr. Sophon Vongchatchainont General Manager for the Aisawan Resort & Spa Pattaya, and Mr. Jirapak Pitirotjirathon the current Thailand Chess Champion at the Aisawan Resort & Spa. Mr. Tuorila thanked the Tourism Authority of Thailand for supporting the Thailand Open Chess Championship.

The tournament in 2008 was attended by 300 players from over 40 countries. The first tournament started in 2002 at the Amari Pattaya with only 13 players from just five countries. This year we believe it will be one of the biggest years we have ever had because the winning prizes all together are valued at nearly 400,000 baht.”

“The chess that we play today originally started in India. The game style Indians play is similar to how Thais play but with some minor rule changes Thai chess is very popular and I want to make it as internationally accepted as I can and I also want to increase national interest in chess.

Mr. Vongchatchainont told the press, “I am glad that the Thailand Open Chess Championship will be held at the Aisawan Resort & Spa. We are more than prepared for this tournament in terms of facilities and services. I think it will also help promote the resort.”

Mr. Kongkrut said, “I am very glad that the Thailand Open Chess Championship is being held here in Pattaya once again. TAT is willing to support this tournament to the fullest and I believe it will draw many tourists to Pattaya which will in turn help to stimulate the local economy.”

Mr. Ekasingh’s closing remarks stated that, “Pattaya City is honored to be holding such an international event. I strongly believe that we have all of the facilities needed for spectators and players. It is easy to get to Pattaya both by car and train. There is also the nearby Uthapao airport which will soon be upgraded to an international standard airport.”

The 5th Thailand Open Chess Championship 2009 will be broadcasted live on Channel 11. It is said that there will be 400 players competing in this tournament ranging from ages 11 all the way to 73 years of age.
