SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s second-largest city Busan has expressed its intention to bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Jeong Jin-hak, an official of Busan Metropolitan City, said Wednesday that the formal application was due in 2011. The host will be chosen in 2013.

But he said Busan will drop the plan if the South Korean city of Pyeongchang wins the right to host the 2018 Winter Olympics after two previous failed attempts. The winner of that bid will be decided in 2011.

South Korea’s capital Seoul hosted the 1988 Olympics, and the bid for a quick return in 2020 was part of a push by the nation to host big sporting events. Incheon, west of Seoul, was awarded the 2014 Asian Games and the southeastern city of Daegu the 2011 World Athletics Championships.

Busan also was selected to stage the World Boxing Championships in 2011.
