Worldwide British embassy director visits Pattaya

21.03.2009 20:30

London based Julian Braithwaite, director of all British consular services in 150 countries, made an inspection of the newly opened Pattaya consulate. He was welcomed by the British honorary consul in Pattaya, Barry Kenyon, who said that the volume of business conducted by the office had increased by 40% in the past three months.

The consulate was now able to perform many more notarial services including affirmation to marry in Thailand and verification of death certificates.  Visiting work in hospitals, police stations and prisons remained constant and included the whole of Chonburi province.

Mr. Braithwaite later addressed a meeting of British expats in the Marriott Hotel and explained that about 1% of British nationals visiting Thailand sought the help of the embassy in one form or another.  The total in Pattaya was over 500 cases a year.  In a question and answer session, he pointed out that expats in Thailand were not necessarily covered by the National Health Service if they returned to UK because of illness.  He also pinpointed the high number of motor bike accidents as being responsible for most of the deaths in Thailand of British nationals under 40 years old.

Mr. Braithwaite congratulated the staff and volunteers attached to the Pattaya consulate for their work over the past year and said he was very unpleased with the progress in the new office in Jomtien.

Pattaya is fortunate to have British Consular Services available here on Jomtien Beach Road, Soi 5 near Immigration.
