Siripun Sinbuathong 21.04.2009 20:30

Two brave Family Mart female shop assistants used a kitchen knife to stop two robbers from stealing money from the cash register.

Two tall men entered The Family Mart store in Soi Chaiyaphruk, Jomtien. One of them wore a white helmet. The two shop assistants, Miss Chonticha Boaban, 20, and Miss Prapaporn Petchburananin, 28, were the only workers in the store that night.

Miss Chonticha, occupied with the cash register reported to Police Lieutenant Colonel Anuchet Katsomboon of Dongtan Police Station that, “Two men entered the store at around  3.20 In the morning. One man was about 170 centimeters tall, wearing a green long-sleeve shirt and jeans. The other man was about the same height wearing a white flower pattern long sleeve shirt with jeans. He was also wearing a white helmet.”

“The two men went to the fridge and picked up two bottles of the energetic drink M150. They then approached the cash register. I did not expect anything out of the ordinary at all. I thought they were just paying for the drinks. I scanned bar code of the drink and opened the cash register to accept the money. All of a sudden, the man without the helmet reached out his hand and tried to grab cash from the registers drawer. The man who wore a helmet then jumped on the counter to help his friend take the money,” Miss Chonticha added.

Miss Chonticha and Miss Boaban tried to stop the two men but they threatened to shoot them both if they intervened. Miss Chonticha courageously decided to grab a kitchen knife on the counter and stabbed one of the man’s hand several times. Both men let go of the cash drawer and escaped on their motorcycle heading to Sattahip.

They managed to steal nearly 2000 baht worth of banknotes. The two shop assistants were conscious enough to try and run after the men to get motorcycle information but unable because it was dark and they rode away too quickly.

This is not the first time that Miss Chonticha was faced with a robbery while working at Family Mart. Miss Chonticha said, “The reason I decided to stab the robbers is because I was still mad from the past robbery which I encountered during Songkran. That time the robber managed to steal a bottle of whiskey. Since that incident, I would always tell myself that I have to fight back. I think it would be easier for the police to track the robber with the stab because he would have to go the hospital.”

The police have contacted all hospitals and ascertained that clinics will report if they see any suspicious patient. So far, there has been no report of such a case, but police will have to further investigate the image captured from the security cameras.
