DJ Hector Fonseca Spins at Asia’s Largest Gay Party: SamuiFantasia 2009
The full interview with DJ Hector Fonseca is in the December issue of Thailand SPICE! Magazine.
Q: Is this your first trip traveling to Thailand and being a Gay Beach Party DJ?
A: “Yes to both! I’ve seen and heard so many amazing things aboutThailand and so it’s really cool that I get to experience it for the first while doing what I love, DJ’ing at a huge Beach Party! Aaaa mazing!!!”
Q: What is your impressions of Thailand?
A: “It seems to be on everyone’s list of “must visit” worldwide. My personal impression is that it has unmatched beauty both in the natural landscape and also the spirit of the people. A true paradise in my book.”
Q: How do you imagine an Asian Gay Party will be different from the ones in America?
A: “Other than the party scene being newer in Asia, I’m not too sure they are different. These parties provide an escape and indulgence in fun and fantasies that most people around the world can relate to wanting. I like to provide that escape via the music and parties that I do globally and so this will be no different, but on a grander scale in Thailand.”
Q: What is the differences from an indoor facility to performing in an outdoor beach setting?
A: “There is a sense of spirituality and sexiness that comes with playing on a beach/outdoor setting that you can’t get indoors. It’s a truly special thing when Music meets Nature and beach parties are the best example of that.”
Q: What has been your most impressive event that happened to you as a DJ?
A: “Carnival in Rio is really impressive. There are thousand of people everywhere and the energy is through the roof! They really enjoy life there! I have a feeling SamuiFantasia will rival that!”
Q: From your experiences DJ’ing around the world, does race, nationality, or cultures, affect music trends in each area?
A: “Yes, definitely. Right now, the Spanish and Brazilian culture has been affecting the music trend in the Circuit Scene lately as those parties are huge and full of beautiful people. I am predicting Asia will be the next big influence in the worldwide scene as parties become bigger and more frequent in multiple cities there”
Q: Do you see many differences between American, Asian and European music trends, if yes, what is the major differences?
A: “Yes, but there is a common theme always. In America, mainstream/ dance music still is big. In Europe and Brazil, there is more of a tribal/progressive influence. In Asia, the music seems to have more of an electronic /progressive influence. I tend to cross over all those vibes and tie them together with a common theme which is enjoying life.
Q: What is your priority in considering what kind and type of music or beats to be used in any event, and do you mind telling us in brief what is your key to select the right beats or music to match an event as in the SamuiFantasia event?
A: “My priority is always making people dance and have fun! For an event like SamuiFantasia, it provides an oppurtunity to stylize the music according to the unique venue, culture and time of the night. This will be the first time playing there for me so I will also play alot of unreleased and hard to find remixes/ productions/edits of mine so that the musical experience is really unique!”
Q: As for ‘Party’ some are well known as celebrations to drink or drug to excess, do you have messages to those partygoers?
A: “My motto when it comes to things like that is that moderation is the key, never overindulge. Too much of anything is bad for you so have a great time but don’t do anything to put your health or anyone else’s in danger. You want to have nothing but good memories about the party so celebrate responsibly!”
Q: Do you have any messages you would like to pass along to all partygoers at this event?
A: “Get ready to experience one of the best parties of the year! I will bring the music and energy, gCircuit will bring amazing decor, sound and landscape and YOU will bring your spirit of joy and celebration to the dancefloor! We will all create a Magical Evening together...see you SPICE!
