The Asian Senior Wrestling Championship was inaugurated at the Ambassador City Jomtien by Pattaya’s Mayor, Mr. Itthiphol Kunplome, who warmly welcomed organizers, coach, spectators, and leading wrestlers from 26 countries.



Pattaya City along with Thailand Wrestling Association and Tourism Authority of Thailand is jointly hosting this international wrestling competition also known as Asian Senior Wrestling Championship 2009 which is being held from May 2-7 at the Ambassador City Jomtien, Pattaya. It is hoped that this competition will help popularize the sport as well as increase potential and skills of wrestlers in preparation for future Asian or international competitions. The tournament is divided into two categories, an indoor event, which will be held in at the hotel’s convention hall, and an outdoor competing, which will be held on the beach. Spectators can expect to enjoy fun and free wrestling matches while at the same time learn more about the sport. Honorable guests including attended the opening ceremony Mr. Raphael Martinetti, President of the International Wrestling Association, Dr. Chang Kew Kim, President of the Asian Wrestling Association, and Professor Doctor Wongsun Sushuntaboot, President of the Thailand Wrestling Association.

As for the first wrestling match, Thai male wrestler, Mr. Jirawat Wichien fought for the bronze medal with Kin Huan More, a wrestler from North Korea. With more experience, the North Korean wrestler defeated the Thai sportsman by 4-0. Thai spectators as well as foreigners enjoyed the match. The indoor wrestling matches will be held from May 2-6 from 9am-12pm to select players for the final round that will played from 4.30pm-7.30pm. The outdoor competitions will be held on May 7 from 8am-11am to select players for the final round that will be played from 3pm-5pm on the same day.
