Last Inning Heroics Leads to Bob’s Team Bagging the Double

Contrasting last week’s Sunday Songkran struggle, The Pattaya Softballer again took to Jimmy’s field of dreams in Jomtien. Just one week after stifling heat, and of wild water wonderment, the Pattaya boys fielded 17 players for our customary double header. The skies were grey and threatening, but the hearty lads still came to swing some bats. Our Norwegian ship captain Odvar had brought a Harley riding buddy named Bob, who was eager to play in his first softball game in over two decades (isn’t it amazing what a late night pep talk at a bar can do) In honour of Bob’s courage or stupidity (depending on how you look at it), he and his fast talking amigo were awarded the Captaincy for the day. It proved to be one of the most dramatic doubleheader to date. For details of the softball action, box scores and game summaries, please read on.

Game 1 The Greatest Comeback In Pattaya Softball History

What started as a white wash win for team Odvar, turned into a historic come from behind victory for Team Bob. Odvar’s boys hit the ball so well in the first few innings, with triples from Nick, Diego, John Stockton and Terry, as well as singles from Shawn, Dan and Peter. They teed off on Team Bob, scoring 3 in the first and 7 in the third to take an almost insurmountable 10-3 lead. However, Odvar’s team got complacent (or drunk) and could not hold their lead. Ahead 12-3 with 1 out in the bottom of the seventh, Bob’s team went wild with their bats. All of their players: John CF, John E, Rocky, Steve, Phil, Mark, Beck and captain Bob managed to strong-arm singles, doubles and homeruns when they needed it most. They scored 8 runs, without getting a single out. Then with Mark and Beck on the corners, Phil hit the game winning double over the outstretched glove of Peter in left center field. Team Bob had done the impossible, erased a 9-run lead in the bottom of the last inning of play. As MVP of the day Mark Reynolds put it “It was the best comeback, ever!” Final score: Team Bob 13, Team Odvar 12.

Game 2: The Rematch Sees Team Bob Again Come Through In the Clutch

So how did Bob’s team follow up such an emotional, last minute victory? How about by coming from behind yet again, and pulling it out in the last inning to win both ends of the double header. Yet again, team Odvar started strong, with a homer from Nick, John Stockton and Terry to lead by a score of 6-2 at the end of the third. However, Team Bob was on a mission, as Spot replaced Steve in the line-up (he was officially traded for a bottle of vodka, but that is another story) and calmly crushed the ball with every at bat. The score was tied at 9 going in to the last inning, when Mark, Beck, Rocky, Phil and Spot all got key hits to give their team 3 vital runs. Odvar’s team tried to spoil the party, but could only manage a single run in the bottom half of the seventh, as John Stockton flied out to Spot in right center field for the final out. Final score was a second victory for Team Bob 12-10, in another exciting encounter of Pattaya softball. Reminder, if you are an athlete of any sort, (or were one many days ago), you are invited to join our fun bunch of softballer every Sunday at 1pm in Jomtien. Directions if coming from Pattaya: take Sukhumvit to Soi 89 (just after Greenway Driving range) and turn left. Follow that road for 7 klms (it winds right 1km after the railway tracks) and turn left on Soi 15. Less then 1km along that road, you will see our ball field on your left. If you would like more details, please email me at igolfwells@ gmail.com or contact the Pattaya Sports Club and ask for Perry or John CF. See you on the diamond soon! BY: Diego Wells
