Minister of Industry Mr. Charnchai Chairungruang resolved that Northeastern Sugarcane Association must adjust its strategy to deal with the current economic crisis.

Mr. Chaiyawat Khamkankhoon, Chairman of Northeastern Sugarcane Association, revealed that the Association was established under the objective of preventing and protecting the sugarcane agricultural industry in the Northeastern region of Thailand. There are currently 12 different sugarcane institutes covering more than 120,000 people. The meeting between the Minister of Industry and the Northeastern Sugarcane Association was initiated for members to exchange opinions in dealing with the current world economic crisis and to discuss the future direction of Thailand’s sugarcane industry.

Minister of Industry Mr. Charnchai Chairungruang inaugurated the event by saying, “Everything seems to change very quickly in this age of increased technology and globalization. Trade is becoming increasingly competitive, more so with the current world economic and financial crisis which has affected every country’s industrial section. In order to survive, organizations must be flexible and be able to change.

Chairungruang continued, “As such, the Thai sugarcane and sugar industry also needs to be adaptable and adjust itself in order to find opportunities during the current crisis. It needs to change its mechanisms including changing almost everything in its system starting from the sugarcane plantation method which the farmers must pay detailed attention to in order to increase the sugarcane’s sweetness. They must also adjust the harvesting and transportation process by using fewer chemicals and cropping fresh sugarcane to be sent to refineries instead of burning the plant during the harvest season.”

Chairungruang added, “Nevertheless, I would like to congratulate all sugarcane farmers who have connected and established their own association. The association has played an important role in driving and developing the sugar and sugarcane industry forward for more than 30 years to make Thailand one of the leading sugar exporters of the world.”
