Laem Chabang Customs Department will enhance security measures in transporting radioactive cargo.

The Laem Chabang Port Customs Department welcomed delegates of countries participating in ‘The Megaports Initiative’ training seminar aimed at strengthening transportation security of official cargo berths at large global piers.

The project is an affiliation between the Customs Department and the US Energy Department initiated by the US Homeland Security as a secondary security measure to detect nuclear materials and other radioactive substances on cargoes transported between countries.

The measure involves installing nuclear or radioactive substance detection equipments at global international ports to help eradicate threats of terrorism as well as prevent the smuggling of weapons of mass destruction.

Mr. Chatchai Onsiri, Director of the Customs Department of Laem Chabang Port said, “The Megaports Initiative is a collaborative effort between the Departments of Customs in Thailand, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Embassy of the United States in Thailand, and the US Department of Energy. It is a project supported by the US Government to help train customs officials to install radioactive detection equipment and to use certain tools to detect dangerous radioactive substances in order to prevent and suppress terrorism. This project will definitely help ensure the safety of Thailand’s exported cargo in the future.”
