FOOUR PATTAYA RESTAURANTS REVIEWED BY “FRUGAL FREDDY” EXPAT GROUP - Pattaya - Restaurant - Frugal Freddy - Expats Club - Japanesde Restaurant - Soi Chaiyapoon - Boat Bakery - Oh Ah Harn Family

Two of the members of the original expats club, the Pattaya City Expats Club, Hawaii Bob and Roger Fox have formed a new special interest group for members, friends and guests who enjoy dining out but doing so at a reasonable price.

The goal of the group is to find restaurants that we can get a complete meal, (Meat, vegetable, potatoes/rice, desert and soft drink) for less than B200. It has called the “Frugal Freddy” group with the goal to explore and eat at the cheapest, best valued, restaurants in Pattaya and report to the expat community our findings. Times are hard for some so it’s really important to get value for money and clean, good tasting food. This group will help.

We originally called ourselves the “Cheap Charlie” dinner group but decided that we wanted to be two levels above the “Balloon Chasers” not one. Most of us live here and are on a budget so do not dine at places like Manhattan or Mantra but envy those who can afford to and do so.

We are targeting restaurants that serve European/continental food as the main feature and have Thai dishes for those who prefer Thai. We will feature a new restaurant every Monday and get together at 6pm. If you are interested in getting on our email list and joining us some Monday evening, or suggesting a restaurant or volunteering your restaurant that meets the above guidelines e-mail me at Hawaiibob4you@yahoo.com.

On our first outing, we went to a new Japanese Restaurant on 3rd Road just North of Xzyite Disco called Wasabi Tei and the evening was a overwhelming success. The restaurant is open air with inside and outside seating for only about 25 people and while they were ill prepared for our invasion of 15 people, at one time they were so appreciative of the business that they gave all of us a 10% discount off our bill. They had set menus from B89 – B109 for chicken, fish, and pork over rice Plus salad, soup, and kimchee. Soft drinks were only B15 so this was a terrific bargain without our 10% discount and ultra inexpensive with it.

Our second outing we met at 6pm at Seaside 2 on Soi Chaiyapoon just east of Soi Buakhao. Featured dinners there are things like two pork chops or spare ribs or roast beef, mashed/ fried/boiled potatoes and gravy, steamed vegetables for B120. For only B110 your can have braised beef or roast chicken or roast pork with the same trimmings. Soft drinks are only B20 and they have a terrific dessert of homemade hot apple pie with five small scoops of ice cream or custard on top for only B55.

Our third outing was at Boat Bakery, 2nd Road across from Soi 13/4. This was a large open air Thai / Western restaurant with an extensive menu at what have to be the rock bottom prices here in Pattaya. Example: Pork Chop with French fries and vegetable only B78, Various hearty soups B35+, take out chicken legs B20, thighs B25. We enjoyed the quantity for the price and all agreed it was a very good value.

The fourth outing for the month was to an all-Thai restaurant called Oh Ah Harn Family Restaurant, located on Pattaya Thai (South Pattaya Road) across from the Soi 12 entrance. Owner/cook prepares all meals to order so be patient. The Restaurant is not much to look at (3-story shop house) but the food is hard to beat even at restaurants charging three times the price they charge. It is hard to find so look hard it will be worth it. The people Thai they have tasted”. The 2nd floor has AC for those who insist on indoor dining. I had the Tom Yung Gai with a dish of rice, my beer cost as much as the whole meal (B70) for each but the Tom Yung was large bowl and excellent with only 10% of the ingredients throw away (Lemon Grass, Ginger, Bay leaves) as opposed to up to 40% at many other restaurants.

We have a rating system rating food, facilities, and Service and the winner this month goes to Seaside 2 and as planned, we will visit the winner again the last week of the following month, please join us or watch this column for new “Frugal Freddy” dining adventures. The Pattaya City Expats Club meets every Sunday at Henry J. Bean’s Restaurant at the north end of Beach Road next to Mantra restaurant. Anyone can go. There is a great breakfast buffet served and interesting speakers as well as an Open Forum to ask any questions or make comments.
