In 4 Easy Steps

If you are considering getting married or registering your marriage that was certified in another country in Thailand this will help. A legal marriage in Thailand consists of both parties registering their marriage in person with the local Thai Amphur (Local District Office). In Pattaya it is located on Sukhumvit Highway on the corner of Sawang Fa Road. The U.S.A. and EU countries and others recognizes the validity of such a marriage.

To register a marriage in Thailand, you must follow these steps:
1. You need a “single paper” from your home country or Bangkok embassy. Contact your embassy to see if they can provide this document or not.  Complete a single-page affidavit at the Embassy's Citizen Services Unit. The document is short and simple and includes all of the information required by Thai law. After completing the document, it must be notarized by an Embassy consular officer. You will need your passport at the time the document is notarized, and you must also pay a notarial services fee in cash as directed at the time the document is notarized. If you have previously been married, you must also complete a second, single-page affidavit. At most embassies an appointment is needed so call to check first.

2. Have the completed affidavit translated into Thai. Prices and time needed for the translation vary from place to place. Unfortunately, the embassy cannot translate documents nor can it "certify" other translations.

3. Have the completed affidavit and Thai-language translation "legalized" by the Thai Government at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Chang Wantana in Bangkok. There is a nominal charge for this service, and the time needed depends on the Thai officials' workload. Tel: 0-2575-1057-8 Fax: 0-2575-1054

4. Take the affidavit and supporting documents to any Amphur office in Thailand; with the assistance of officials there, you may then legally register your marriage. (If neither party speaks Thai, bring a translator). Please note that you must supply the following documents:
