Their Majesties the King and Queen presented some 30,000 copies of the Quran, the Muslim Holy Scriptures, in a dual text format with a Thai translation along with the classic Arabic text to the Central Islamic Committee of Thailand for distribution to 36 provinces across the country.

It is the first time the texts have been published together in both languages.

Professor Dr. Ukrit Mongkolnavin, former House speaker and former chairman of the independent Commission on Justice and Civil Liberties for the Southern Border Provinces (ICJC) presented the 30,000 holy books to the culture minister Thursday.

Dr. Ukrit said the Ministry of Culture and the Office of the Chularajamontri will distribute the holy books with the monograms of Their Majesties King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit on the covers to the office of the Central Islamic Committee of Thailand in 36 provinces and about 1,000 mosques.

According to Dr. Ukrit, the compiler of the special version of the holy book wanted to see the end of the violence in the southern border provinces. The attempt to solve the unrest didn’t succeed because officials’ operation, lack of unity and honesty and has a hidden agenda, he said.

When the violence escalated, more troops were transferred to the restive South and a larger budget was spent in an unsuccessful attempt to quell the violence.

From his own first-hand experience, he said, local people want sufficient food, employment, education, and healthy surroundings.
