KING OF POP: DIES AT 50; WORLD MOURNS

Michael Jackson fans around the world are paying tribute to the King of Pop, who touched so many lives with his music and his talent and who has left his impression on the world following his mysterious circumstances surrounding his death at the age of on 50 years old.



Fans are gathering in public places to mourn together, holding vigils, moments of silence, singing his songs, dancing to his tunes, posting their feelings on the internet, and even making t-shirts for everyone to wear. Jackson’s mother has filed court papers to get custody of Jackson’s three young children. Black leaders Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are disturbed that so much attention has been brought to the child sex charges to all of which Jackson was found not guilty in 1992 and 2005.

 

He should be remembered for the totality of the man, the performer, the dancer, the singer, said Sharpton.

 

Thousands have gathered near Jackson’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. At the star, a small plastic boat sits on the ground with Peter Pan inside and a note that says, ‘Michael, here is Peter Pan to take you to Neverland’.

 

Crowds of mourners held vigil outside the Jackson family’s home in Gary, Indiana. Fans also gathered together outside Neverland Ranch in southern California, Jackson’s house in Holmby Hills and the Apollo Theatre in New York. Michael Jackson performed at Harlem’s Apollo as a child during segregation.

 

In Times Square, in New York City, the giant TV screens told passers- by of Jackson’s death and people flocked there to watch the news unfold together as they did for John Lennon and Elvis Presley.

 

In Bucharest, Romania, a message board was erected in the downtown area, as Michael Jackson was the first person to perform there in 1992 after the fall of the Soviet bloc. Thousands of notes praising the superstar have been posted to his memory.

 

The inmates at the Cebu prison in the Philippines, who danced to Thriller on YouTube, are planning to perform a commemoration dance.

 

In Toronto, fans held a candlelight vigil in Dundas Square and people drew chalk pictures on the sidewalk for Michael.

Jesse Jackson Jr., called for a moment of silence in the US House of Representatives, while hundreds of fans still held a vigil outside the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California where Michael died.

 

The Glastonbury Festival, currently taking place in the UK, plans to pay tribute to the late singer.

 

The Black Entertainment Awards in America were extended on June 28 to pay a half-hour tribute to the man responsible for music videos, the success of MTV, uniting backs and whites and becoming the most well-know human being in the entire world. The King of Pop had the best selling album in history, “Thriller” as well as hundreds of top 10 hits spanning three decades.

In Russia, a Michael Jackson impersonator tried to commit suicide by cutting his wrists, while in Moscow fans laid flowers on the streets and sang together.

 

Beijing record shops played his music and they plan to hold a candlelight vigil.

 

Numerous Face book groups are also popping up, starting flash mobs and dance parties in memory to the singer.

 

Fans will continue to show their love and support for the singer and his music will not be forgotten soon it seems.

 

In Thailand, a poll says Thai fans of the late pop star Michael Jackson wish to learn more about his musical career. They also believe his passing underlines the lesson that riches cannot overcome mortality.

 

A survey by Suan Dusit Poll conducted with 1,028 Thai people found that over 45% of the respondents were saddened by the news of his death with 23% feeling that the pop music industry lost one of its iconic artists. Nearly 17% were still unsure to the definite causes of Michael Jackson’s death.

Asked about what they wished to know the most about the King of Pop, 37% of the Thais said they hoped media outlets would issue a detailed summary of his career and a catalogue of his music and talents. 20% wanted the media to focus on his cause of death. Over 18% wanted the reactions of his family members to be publicized.

When the Thais were asked what they would like to convey to Michael Jackson if possible, 32% said they would like to tell him that he would forever be the world’s King of Pop with 28% saying for him to rest in peace. 21% said that he would continue to remain in the hearts of his fans while 10% telling that he was a unique and skilled performer. 7% said they would express regret that he could no longer perform concerts.
