The Be1st Smart card will be available in metropolitan areas from June 1, 2009.

Thailand’s leader in innovative banking technologies, Bangkok Bank has launched the Be1st Smart Visa debit card - Thailand’s first debit card equipped with global standard EMV chip technology, which promises much more considerable security for ATM transactions and shopping.

‘EMV’ stands for Europay MasterCard Visa, which is a global chip security standard ratified by the major card companies. Bangkok Bank is also rolling out new ATM technology in line with the new standard. The chip-enabled Be1st Smart card will give customers additional confidence in the security of their card, their ATM transactions, and when shopping at Visa merchants. Fees for the Be1st Smart card have been held at the same level as regular debit cards.

“Bangkok Bank is proud to again be Thailand’s leader in product and service innovation, launching the country’s newest and most secure debit card with EMV chip technology, the Be1st Smart card. Our customers will continue to enjoy the highest level of security and peace of mind. The EMV chip will help prevent fraud arising from card skimming and cloned cards,” Bangkok Bank Executive Vice President Bordin Unakul said.

“Bangkok Bank has consistently developed innovative technologies and services with Thailand’s first chip card integrated into Bangkok Bank’s credit card in 2005; the first transit card – the Be1st BTS card in 2007; the contactless Visa Blue Wave credit card in 2008, and the recent pilot of a credit card on a mobile phone. These launches reflect Bangkok Bank’s commitment to setting the standard for Thailand in card technology, bank services and security,” Mr. Unakul said.

“Bangkok Bank is continually innovating and upgrading its information technology systems, both in hardware and software. The bank has recognized customer’s concerns about card security and believes that a highly secure debit card will give people the confidence they are looking for – both at the ATM and when they use the card for shopping,” he continued.

The Be1st Smart card can be used to withdraw cash or make other transactions at Bangkok Bank ATMs displaying the icon. The Be1st Smart card can also be used to shop online or at any domestic or overseas merchant displaying the logo - over 100,000 in Thailand and in more than 100 countries around the world.  Unlike a credit card, funds are deducted directly from the cardholder’s account and there are no monthly bill or interest charges.

The Be1st Smart card will be available in metropolitan areas from June 1, 2009, while upcountry customers will be able to receive a Be1st Smart card from July 1, 2009. Despite the new innovation and upgrade in security, fees for the Be1st Smart card have not increased, with a joining fee of just 100 Baht and an annual fee of 200 Baht.
