Recently, a group of Portuguese media paid a courtesy call on Mr. Kasit Piromya, Minister of Foreign Affairs, at Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote activities being organized to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Thai-Portuguese bilateral relations.

Foreign Minister Kasit briefed the group on the background and importance of the close ties between Thailand and Portugal since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1511, during the Ayutthaya period.

The activities to celebrate this historic milestone are aimed at raising public awareness of its historical significance and the longstanding friendship between the two countries, particularly as Portugal was a leader in military technology and its food culture has had an enduring influence on Thailand’s own cuisine.

Foreign Minister Kasit also exchanged views with the group on other issues such as global economic challenges and Myanmar.

The activities to mark the 500th anniversary of Thai-Portuguese bilateral relations will be held in 2011. Both sides have been in continuous consultation in preparation for the joint activities
