Finance Ministry asks cabinet to consider reducing current oil excise tax if crude prices keep rising
Deputy Minister of the Finance Ministry Mr. Puettachai Dumrongrut revealed on June 23, that the government is mulling over the idea of revising a new rate of gasoline excise tax due largely to the oil prices constantly increasing. Previously, the crude oil was only $40 dollars per barrel, but now the price is reaching $70 dollars per barrel.
Thus, the government might consider reviving the cost-of-living relief measures on petrol, diesel, and cooking gas because it had been removed from the six Measures for six Months program. The expiry date for the state stimulus measure is due at the end of July. However, the Senate House has recently voted down the oil tax decree to lower the tax ceiling.
The Finance Minister has discussed this matter with the Prime Minister and they agree to help cushion rising costs of living by lowering the excise taxes for fuels. The tax may be reduced to five baht to six baht per liter in the near future, which depends on the crude oil price (The executive oil tax decree has lifted the tax ceiling from five baht to ten baht per liter, but the government has raised the rate up only two baht per liter). If the government decides to subsidize the oil prices, it should be done prior to the expiration of measures.
