Deputy Pattaya Mayor Ronnakit Ekasing discusses how to set up and develop VHF and GIS, in order to insure ocean safety.

Pattaya City is making substantial progress towards the development of a Sea Safety and Information System for all waterways to ensure safety and confidence of residents Fishermen and tourists.

In recent weeks, two major issues were discussed. The first is consideration to set up a VHF (very high frequency) radio system. The VHF is radio waves which move very quickly and produce good sound quality.

Another key issue is to develop and improve the Geographic Information System or GIS. The GIS is a set of intelligent maps and other views, which display features and relationships on the earth's surface In order to streamline the GIS, a new ocean database and map must be frequently updated. In order to increase efficiency of the GIS, Remote Sensing and Global Positioning System (GPS) will be set up accordingly.

Mr. Woottipon Jaroenpon, Chief of Pattaya Administration Office, revealed that there are still many details to be discussed regarding ocean safety. He added that having new equipment using the latest technologies is not good enough. The City must train their marine rescue officers and ground staff to be able to offer 24 hour sea rescue service, firefighting, and damage-prevention. All new equipment is good, but it can be useless if no one knows how to operate it. His point is that the City must have well-trained staff not just owning the tools.
