Welcome to the world "Luk Chai", a newborn Thai baby elephant in Australia.

The first elephant born in Australia has been drawing huge crowds. Taronga Zoo’s visitors’ numbers have surged to 12,000 a day, up from the usual 4,500 as people flock to see the baby male elephant born in the beginning of July to its Thai mother.

The elephant was named “Luk Chai” which means male child in Thai was chosen from over 30,000 entries in a competition ran by the zoo. The baby elephants' mother, “Thong Dee”, was a former Bangkok street elephant. New South Wales (NSW) Premier Nathan Rees announced the winning name.

“Communities across NSW have embraced this competition and I would like to thank everybody who has participated.” He said. The name recognized the young elephant’s Thai heritage, as well as his boisterous, inquisitive nature.
