Man convicted for sex on internet
The Thai owner of a website accessible in Thailand got a suspended one-year jail term, two years probation, a fine of 20,000 baht and 48 hours of community service for pictures a member posted in a forum.
The criminal charge, arrest and subsequent judicial sentencing were the result of a member posting explicit sexual pictures of a Thai woman on the site, a violation of the Computer-Related Crimes Act. A woman from Nakhon Sawan in the sex-scene pictures reported the crime to police claiming the Thai man’s website was used to damage her reputation.
Charges were placed against the website owner, not the one who posted the pictures because the website owner allowed the pictures to stay on the site. The pictures remained posted on the site for 55 days before they were removed.
Other websites like http://www.thaivisa.com, www.pattaya-addicts.com, www.spicemag.net and www.pattayasecrets.com do a good job of monitoring their own websites by using moderators to monitor in real-time and a computer program that flags objectionable words and pictures.
"As soon as anything is posted which is in violation of Thai law and the Computer-Related Crimes Act we delete the objectionable posting," said Barry Main, a Pattaya resident and a moderator of www.thaivisa.com.
