Pattaya hosts successful ASEAN assembly of international leaders

Pattaya has regained some of its prestige as a safe, well-policed location for major international events. Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva presided over the ceremony on August 4th, welcoming all the representatives, stating that Thailand was honored to host an important Association of South East Asian Nations meeting once again.
Pattaya’s new police chief along with national security experts made sure no chances were taken with security at the 30th ASEAN Inter- Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) meetings held at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort Hotel in Pattaya from August 2-8.
Red-shirted protestors caused the ASEAN meetings in April to be cancelled, although the ASEAN Finance Minister’s meetings were successfully completed three days before at the Amari Garden Resort & Tower, Pattaya.
Representatives from the eight AIPA member countries; Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam together with two special observer countries; Brunei Darussalam and Myanmar as well as nine observer countries; Australia, Canada, China, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Papua New
Police General Jongrak Jutanon told reporters prior to the meeting, “Police will take tough action against all law violators. A demonstration will be allowed but it must be peaceful and without the use of weapons. 800 police will be deployed to provide security for all delegates and facilitate traffic flows.”
